Time

1. Please explain a time proverb in your culture.
縁は異なもの。
Marriage is made in happen.
So this means man and woman's chance is strange things.

2. What do the following proverbs mean:
a. Time is money.
Time is very important things like a money.
So dont waste our time!

b. A stitch in time saves nine.
This is very difficult for me.

c. There's no time like the present.
It is chance now.

d.Let's meet at 4. If I'm not there by 5, leave without me at 6, and I'll be there at 7.
It is very importany to take a action early.

1.Since Japanese weddings are expensive, do you think having a massive wedding like Korea or UAE is a good idea? Why?
I think Japanese likes grand party. But I don't like it. I like small party.
So I think a massive wedding is not a good idea. But maybe bridge and groom are very happy to congratulate with many people!

2. What do you think about eloping? Is it a good idea or romantic? Why?
Ummm... I think eloping is dramatic things! I don't want to do it. But in case of drama, it is romantic I think.

3. Have you ever thought about having a wedding in a foreign location like Hawaii? Would you do it? Why?Or Why not?
My father sometimes says " you should hold a wedding party in Hawaii!"
In case of it, I want to invite real best friends and real close people!
I think a foreign wedding is good ways to hold a happy wedding.

4.What is your ideal wedding?
My ideal wedding is small wedding.
Gathered real close friends, people, teacher and familly!

5.What would you definitely do, wear or go to on that big day? Why is that important?

6. Have you ever been to a foreigner's wedding? What was your impression?

1.Do you think it is important to talk about superstitions in cross culture communication class? Why?

I think it is not so important.
But! Superstitions are very interesting and different from all over the worlds. So this is good communication tools, I think.

2.Is communication affected by superstitions?
I think "Yes".
If some country people believe in superstition about shaking hands with women, you are being impiety. So I can not shake hands with them. I can not agree with them.

3.Do you believe in superstitions? If yes, what superstitions do you believe?Why do you do, use, or believe in them?
I believe that if I see black cat, happen the impiety things.

#3 The Language of Clothes

1. Do you judge people according to what they wear? Why?
Yes. I judge people according to what they wear.
Not a little, I always check other people's clothes and I think what she is job or why he is wearing dirty clothes. In my case, I don't wear dirty clothes and tasteless clothes. In addition, I want to get a good first impression when I meet people for the first time. If I wear the dirty clothes, other people think she is unclean. So I think it is important to get a good first impression.

2. Do you think Japanese society puts an importance on clothing when judging other people from another country?
Yes. But another countries puts an importance on clothing, too.
Especially, it is very strict when I go to the high-class restourants than Japan. We should wear the dress and suit. If we don't wear like clothes or wear casual clothes, we must not enter the restaurant. So I think almost contries put an importance on clothing.

3. What colors are you wearing now? Do they reflect your mood?
I am wearing room wear. It is very casual style so I am relaxing now.

1. What are some subjects that you will never discuss with a friend?
I discussed with friend about a boy! For example, why does not this boy know about girl's feeling etc.

2. Do you have different friends for different parts of your life?
If so, how are they different to you? Do you talk about different things?
Go to different places? Give me some examples.
In my case, I don't have a different parts with not so close friends.
I want to go to shopping, movie and travelling with very close friends and I ask them to a travelling etc.

1.Where do you go when you die?

I hope I go to the sky !

2.Why do Japanese have death memorial services 1month, 1 year, 3years, 7years, etc. after a person's death?

I think everyone have death memorial to remember the death people.

#2 Dath and Funerals

a. Do you have any international friends or a host family? If so, how would you express your condolences to them if a family member died? If not, then how would you express condolences to an American host family if their Grandmother died?



I have some international friend and host family.

If a family member died, I could do support other familys.

But I can't talk with other family well in a few days.

I can not know what to do in this case.



b. Have you ever been to a foreign funeral?

I never been to a foreign funeral. Only watch through the TV or movie.



2. The language of Clothes (preparation for next weeks topic):

a.Why are Japanese designer label crazy? Why is what you wear so important?



Ithink Japanese like surplus wrapping.

Especially most of Japanese care about wrapping when Japanese give a present to other people.



In my opinion, wrapping is useless!

So when I go shopping, I says " I don' t need a wrapping".





b.What does “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” mean to you?

I think this mean that there is no room it is important to cover the book by wrapping.

Politics and Reflections

If you were working for the UN, which job would like to do using your English abilities?

If I was working for the UN, I want to work at the UNICEF. I want to do for world's children.
Recently, I watched the documentary TV program. Then I know the real circumstances at the developing country. I was very shocked and very sad. There are many children who want to eat anythings. But they can not eat sonethings everyday!! Can you imagine that their feelings?

I think every children should be equality. But it is difficult in the fact. I want every children to eat many foods. So I want to do somethings for them.

Therefore, we must not leave foods, waste the money!

Homework


Q.What kind of work place do you think you will work best in?
I want to work in New York.
My images, women who work in New York are very cool!
Besides, I think American people especially New Yoker have power to work .
During the business time, they work very very hard. But finish their work, they do what they want. I like this switch.
But Japanese work overtime of their own motion. In addiion, they bring their work home.
This is not good fot Japanese, I think. Japanese should cherish own time more!

My model man is like a this graph.
It is very important for me to fit with my sense of value.
Next important point is fashionable. I don't like man who is unfashionable. For example, like a "Akihabara Man". Besides gentle and chivalrous man is very nice!
Maybe, there is no man who has my all ideals. But I want to look for the my ideal man someday.

Homework

1.Are feelings, emotions and facial expressions universal across borders, happy, sad, etc..?

I think emotions and facial expressions are same things. Many people who live all over the the world have same emotions.

2. Try to name as many feelings as possible in Japanese. ( 10 minimum) Then, write the English translation.
幸せ hapy        悲しい sad
嬉しい glad 楽しい fun
疲れた tired ドキドキする beat 
興奮する excite 羨ましい enviable
怒る angry  緊張する tense
3. Are there any feelings in Japanese that cannot be translated into English?
I think Japanese vogue-word, "Mukatuku" is difficult to translated into English.

GreetingⅡ

1.How do you greet members of your family?

When I greet with my family, I said "Ohayou" , " Oyasumi" etc. So I use a casual style greetings.

2. How do you greet people that are important in society?

In this case, I change how to greet. I do a polite greeting. For example, " Ohayougozaimasu", "Situreisimasu" etc. So I use a polite words.

3. Do you greet people from the opposite sex in a different way?

In my case, my greeting are not different with the opposite sex.

4. Do you hug anyone? If yes, who and when. If no, why not?

I don't hug anyone in Japan. Because Japanese don' t have such a habit. I think Japanese ashamed to hug. When I go abroad, I sometimes hug foreigner. I think hug is good greeting way.

Greeting

I always greet every people. For example, my family, my friends and teacher. When I meet people who is stranger in the elevator, I greet them. When I greet, I never fail to see a people's eyes. Because I want to do comfortable greeting. I think it is important to greet. If we can not do a comfortable greeting, we feel sad or not good feeling in a day.

I sometimes touch with my friends' shoulder with we are talking. But I do not know why I do this action. I think it is habit. And also I do this action unconsciously. So I want to notic about my these habit.

Buddhism

There are our daily life affected by Buddism in Japan.

For example, we say "itadakimasu" when we bigin to eat somethings. Besides we join our hands together.

Next when we go to the tatami room, we must take off our room shoes.

Third we care about pillow's position. I often hear that north pillow is good.

Forth when we sit down on the floor, we fold our legs under ourself.

Fifth we pray in front of household Buddhist altar.

I do these action almost everyday. Especially I always say "itaakimasu". When I say this words, I appreciate that I can eat many foods every day. And I appreciate that my mother and farmer makes foods for me, too. I did not learn this action at school. I learn this action in a natural way.
I want to learn about Buddhism more.

Cross Culture Problem

Recently, we often watch the news about whaling problem. Japan and other countries have opinions which opposed to each other.



Japanese have eaten a whole since the Jomon period. And now, Japanese get a whole to examine in the Antarctic Ocean. So Japanese are accustomed to get a whole. But other countries people can not understand Japanese actions.



Now, Japanese and other countries people hold the meeting(IWC) to talk about a wholing in future. However, both opinions are opposing. They are aiming to agree on both opinions. Next meeting are going to hold in this June.



I think this problem is very difficult and cultural problem caused this problem. I want to notice this priblem.
